Kokoroko is a London-based collective formed in 2014 by Sheila Maurice-Grey and Onome Edgeworth, born out of a desire to bring the legacies of afrobeat and highlife into dialogue within the African diaspora. Breakthrough came in 2018 with the track Abusey Junction, which quickly established the group as a key figure in London’s contemporary music scene, blending jazz, African music and modern sounds. Following a well-received debut EP and the album Could We Be More (2022), acclaimed by both critics and audiences, Kokoroko expanded their musical palette by exploring club and electronic influences. Their second album, Tuff Times Never Last (2024), celebrates resilience and joy through a warm, dance-driven sound rooted in the Black London experience and enriched by funk, soul, disco and lovers rock. Both a tribute to past musical legacies and a forward-looking statement, Kokoroko now assert a collective identity that is free, confident and constantly evolving.
